The third and final season of Dead to Me, which premieres on Netflix on November 17 (see the trailer above), saw a five-month production halt following Christina Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis in the summer of 2021.
According to Applegate, there was a feeling that “let’s get her some medicine so she can get better.” There is no better, either. But I found it beneficial. I needed to process losing my life and that aspect of myself. I thus required that time.
Although I didn’t come out of there saying, “Woohoo, I’m absolutely OK,” she continued. “Acceptance? No. Never will I be able to accept this. I’m furious.
For Applegate, returning to finish the last 10 episodes of the dark comedy was a given. The actor, however, admitted to the newspaper that finishing the season was the most difficult thing she had ever done. During some shots, a sound technician “would be on the floor, out of the camera’s range, holding up her legs,” according to the Times. Applegate was transported to the set in a wheelchair.
Applegate said, “I felt a responsibility to [series creator] Liz [Feldman] and to [co-star] Linda [Cardellini], to our plot. The ruling class said, “Let’s simply quit. We don’t have to complete it. Let’s put together a couple episodes. I replied, “No. We’re going to do it, but only under my conditions.
