Knives Out 3 Receives Exciting Update from Director

In addition to teasing ideas for Knives Out 4 and beyond, director Rian Johnson disclosed where Knives Out 3’s development is now at.

Rian Johnson found success with his Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery Knives Out, which stars Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, following the criticism surrounding his foray into the Star Wars universe with The Last Jedi.

Johnson swiftly started preparing for Detective Blanc to make an appearance in additional solo mystery sequels after Knives Out’s commercial and critical success. This even attracted the attention of streaming juggernaut Netflix, which secured exclusive rights to Knives Out 2 and 3 for $450 million, defeating rivals Apple and Amazon.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which sent Benoit Blanc to Greece to look into a brand-new case full of twists and turns and a cast of MCU veterans, is the first of those sequels that recently made its way into Netflix.

Talk about when the next of the promised streaming sequels would arrive has started as a result of Glass Onion’s overwhelmingly positive critical reaction (now sitting at a 94% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Johnson has now discussed Knives Out 3’s development, however it’s far too early to give a specific release date.

Knives Out director reveals a franchise update for the future.

Rian Johnson, the director of Knives Out and Glass Onion, provided an intriguing update on the production of the third edition of the franchise in the most recent holiday issue of RadioTimes. He also touched on the possibility of further future films in the series.

Johnson responded, “Just trying to figure out what the next one is going to be,” when asked if he had any ideas for Knives Out 3.

The third instalment under the contract with Netflix, the murder-mystery filmmaker continued, will be the last one, but he “doesn’t see it as a trilogy” and instead wishes to continue the franchise “for as long [they] can:”

“We have one more film left under our agreement with Netflix, but I don’t consider it to be a trilogy. I see it as a continuing issue. We’ll continue doing this for as long as we can as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having fun and always coming up with something fresh and fascinating.”

Johnson and Netflix inked a $450 million agreement for the next two films in the franchise to be released on the streaming service after the success of 2019’s Knives Out.

Daniel Craig, who starred in Knives Out, was then asked if he anticipated playing Detective Blanc for as long as he did James Bond, which was 15 years. The British actor said that future plans have been “discussed at length” and that he intends to keep producing as long as the public is entertained:

“I should be so fortunate, really! We’ve talked about doing more of these Knives Out movies for a long time. We’ll continue to do it as long as we can make people laugh.”

What date will Netflix release Knives Out 3?

Knives Out 3 is still in the planning stages, according to director Rian Johnson, who has only recently started to put concepts together. This would seem to indicate that he hasn’t actually begun writing the script, which could put the release of the following Benoit Blanc mystery in the future.

The director, however, seems to have put aside his own Star Wars trilogy in order to concentrate on creating the sequels, suggesting that the franchise is currently his top priority. Accordingly, the pace of the writing may rely on how rapidly Johnson develops the ideas for the upcoming cast of people, riddles, and twists.

Knives Out, which came out in 2019, and Glass Onion, which came out in 2022, took place three years apart, therefore the threequel might come out in 2025. Knives Out 3 might be released even sooner, though, as the epidemic and Daniel Craig’s commitments to No Time To Die both delayed the original sequel’s production.

The partnership with Netflix will have come to an end by that time, so sadly Knives Out 4 might require a lengthier wait. Johnson and Netflix may decide to rapidly renew, providing Glass Onion and its follow-up are successful on streaming, despite the fact that Johnson made $100 million from his pact for the first two sequels.

Since Knives Out 3 will be completely independent of the first two movies and include a new mystery and character, it is currently unknown what Benoit Blanc’s next case will entail. Though, considering recent revelations about his character, there will undoubtedly be much more growth for Craig’s southern detective.

With the introduction of Benoit Blanc’s partner Phillip, portrayed by British star Hugh Grant, Glass Onion made its first foray into the queerness of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc. Grant might be the first actor outside of Craig to make a comeback in the movie, as Johnson has already suggested that Blanc’s sexuality might play a bigger role in Knives Out 3.

Netflix is the only place to watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery right now.
